The Internet of Things (IoT) turned people counting from a manual job into a connected one. A modern counter reports its figures to the cloud by itself, a dashboard turns them into reports, and the data can be exported or passed to other systems. Here is what that looks like in practice.

How IoT Transforms People Counting

  1. Connected counting, current figures
The WELLPOINT People Counter sends entry and exit counts to WELLPOINT.cloud in real time, with data updates every 5 minutes on PLUS and PRO (hourly on LITE). Occupancy is calculated in the cloud as entries minus exits.
  2. Integration with other systems
PLUS and PRO offer CSV export for Excel or ERP imports, and on PRO, the API can be used to integrate WELLPOINT visitor counts with POS, BI or other business systems. What those systems do with the counts is set up on their side.
  3. Sensor technology
IoT counters use thermal imaging, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth detection, cameras or time-of-flight (ToF). WELLPOINT uses a ToF matrix sensor mounted beside the entrance at 1.2 to 1.4 m, at a right angle to the walking direction. It has no camera and does not identify people.
  4. Smarter resource allocation
With hourly and daily visitor figures, businesses and public buildings can plan cleaning, security and staff around actual use.
  5. History instead of guesswork
WELLPOINT.cloud shows trends month by month and monthly totals per location; your team reads those patterns and plans ahead. The system itself does not make predictions.
  6. Scalable, cloud-based management
Each device connects through built-in mobile data, so adding a site does not involve the local network. Several sites sit in one account.

Benefits

  • Counts reach the cloud without manual reading
  • CSV export and, on PRO, an API
  • Browser dashboard that also works on a phone
  • Camera-free, anonymous entry and exit counts

Real-World Impact

  • A public building could plan service-desk staff and cleaning around its daily visitor figures.
  • Retailers and malls could compare entrances and sites in one dashboard.
  • Indoor venues could follow occupancy, measured at their entrances, during events.

Take a government office as an illustration: with counters at its entrances, it could see which weekdays bring the most visitors and open an extra service desk on those days.

The Pulse V3 is a 114 × 54 × 41 mm counter with a 5 V USB power adapter and a connection to WELLPOINT.cloud that needs no network cable. Order it on visitorcount.com.
